L’ESTATE DELL’ORSO POLARE

POLAR BEAR SUMMER

di/by Klaus Scheurich – Produzione/Produced by Marco Polo Film AG – Broadcaster: Smithsonian Networks, Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) - Germania/Germany 2015

Area trattata/Featured area: Hudson Bay, Canada

The theme of the documentary pays particular attention to a current issue and problem that is directly affecting all of us; namely, global warming! We were especially struck by the polar bear’s behavior. He finds himself stranded in unfamiliar environments during the summer months. However, he doesn’t seem to present evidential signs of distress or difficulty in adapting to these circumstances. We really appreciated the way in which the lifestyle of a solitary male bear was compared to that of a mother bear, who must take care of her cubs. Another element favoring this documentary is its high quality images, along with its straightforward explanations and simple, effective narrative language. These factors make it easy for a broad audience to follow the story.

FORESTE PRIMORDIALI: STORIA DI UNA RESURREZIONE

THE MAKING OF AN ANCIENT FOREST

di/by Rita Schlamberger – Produzione/Produced by ScienceVision – Austria 2015

Area trattata/Featured area: Parco Nazionale Kalkalpen / Kalkalpen National Park, Austria

The principle of Lavoiser that “everything transforms” is confirmed in the primordial forests of the Kalkalpen National Park in Austria. Nature’s revenge over humankind is what brings the forest back to its original primordial state, after nearly a quarter of a century. Coherent, effective, well-balanced sequences and dialogues make this documentary that of a perfect symphony capable of astonishing its audience. The documentary highlights the current issue of the re-birth of an environment that often is damaged and destroyed by human beings. It is a documentary that makes you stop and think, enhanced by an excellent soundtrack and good production techniques.
